60s Fashion

Get a glimpse of fashion for teens in the '60s

There is absolutely no doubt about the fact that fashion industry has not reached to zenith, but it is also an undeniable truth that the change in fashion during the '60s has played a big role in taking this industry to new heights.

It all started during the sixties, when young people were in command of this industry. All sorts of new designs and fashions were coming into being in those days. Some of those styles stayed for long, others vanished quickly. But, many designers still take inspiration from those old ideas.

However, if you are one of those people who are totally unaware of what was in fashion in those days, you should go through the following paragraphs. Although there was a change in dressing for elder men, children and young people, the change for younger generation was quite noticeable. And, that’s what will be covered in following few paragraphs.

The first fact about '60s was the consistent change in trends. What was in demand during the early '60s was totally out of focus during the mid '60s. For instance, saddle shoes were in demand in the early '60s but were out of fashion shortly. Similarly, the guys were a fan of white socks, but this obsession didn’t last long and socks were out of the scene – like they were never there.

For shoes, it is also crucial to mention that the options for shoes were pretty small in those years. Teens, in the early and mid sixties, were totally unaware of running shoes, walking shoes, climbing shoes, racquetball shoes, pump up shoes, hiking shoes, and other exquisite sport shoes. All they were aware of were the tennis shoes, and, mind you, they were pretty happy with that. But, as change is natural, the new options started to show up by the late sixties.

There was another short-lived but interesting trend in those golden years – the poodle skirt. This skirt was actually used by young ladies, and they were quite proud of their possessions. But, all this started to change in the mid '60s, especially for teens.

The fashion for teen changed on a rapid pace. Where there was no one with facial hair in the late fifties and early sixties, there were bearded people in the mid sixties. Generally though, the hair style for young guys was all about having short hair, but it started to change with the Beatles hitting the world. Though they were also not wearing long hair, it was still on the extreme side. People followed them and it was only until 1964 when most guys were wearing short hair; but, after this point of time there were guys with long hair and the style became even more popular by the end of the '60s.

Another important thing about the '60s fashion was the introduction of bell bottom pants. It is pertinent to mention that many people thing bell bottom pants were in popular right from the beginning of the '60s, but that was not the case. In the early sixties, what was in fashion was tight pants; so tight that one could hardly get them over his ankle. The bell bottom pants were worn by guys in the late '60s and early '70s.

Another common misconception about teen fashion during the sixties was about girls wearing pants. Though girls wore them, it was quite late in that particular decade. Skirts and blouses were more common for most part of the sixties, and were worn by girls even in the winter. But, in winters, knee-high boots were preferred by many girls with same skirts and blouses.

However, the fashion for teen girls changed in the late sixties when short skirts were more in vogue. In fact, in late sixties and early seventies, these skirts got really, really short, and there were some of those really short shorts that were called, 'hot pants'.

It all boils down to the fact that there were quite a few different fashion trends for people to follow. But, the good thing is that study of those trends help modern day designers to produce something really stylish by mixing up old and new trends. This is a popular philosophy for many designers but it really helps people get something to look really, really stylish.
