60s Fashion

60s fashion trends – learn what was 'on' those days!

Fashion trends never stay the same, as people in fashion world keep on producing something different to fulfill the needs and demands of people of a special era. That was the precise reason why there were so many changes in the fashion trends during the sixties.

In '60s, people were more interested in getting something that may make them look stylish, hip and unique. To accomplish this task they started doing different experiments with their clothes, and that was the time when the foundation stone for the hippy culture was laid in the real sense.

Although the changes in fashion trends were quite a lot, some of them were more important and noticeable. For instance, the first noticeable change during the sixties was in material used for clothing. The most important fashion trend was based on the use of different types of materials. Some of the clothes were specifically designed using plastic and metal with wire. The use of glitter and shimmer was also on an upsurge during that specific era.

In addition to change in material there was another big change in the sixties – the introduction of mini skirts. In '60s, all parties and GTGs (get together) started seeing more and more young women elegantly clad in short skirts. This was actually a change in trend because the basic fashion in the fifties was about wearing long skirts. These skirts were invented by Mary Quant and were the most sought clothing options for women. These skirts were 6 inches above the knees, and perhaps that was the big reason why they were loved by women and men as well. But, one thing is for sure that the time started to change with the introduction of those minis, which are still as popular as they were in past.

Although short skirts were extremely popular in those days, the skinny jeans were also loved by many; thanks to Audrey Hepburn, a popular Hollywood beauty. The skinny jeans were made popular by this Hollywood beauty and there was a serious competition between the jeans and the mini skirts. That was actually a neck to neck competition, and is still going on! But, the only difference is that you can still see skinny jeans but it is not easy to find minis with those big floral prints and polka dots.

Another very important change in fashion was with swimwear. That was the time when bikinis hit the world in some style. The bikini in the sixties was quite bold – not as bold as some of the pieces today – but they were bold when compared to other clothes and fashion trends in '60s. They still continued to gain a lot of popularity as it was a generation who had already accepted the short skirts.

So, you can see that there was a complete revolution in fashion trends during the sixties. Color got changed, styles of clothes were different, prints were unique, and the entire generation was bolder than ever. But, it wouldn’t wrong to suggest that it was only due to those bolder designs in sixties that you can now see some of the most astounding and awe-inspiring designs of clothes – all thanks to '60s fashion!
